Star Trek - Worship of the Sun

The original Star Trek series was great entertainment for the time. Created in the late 1960's, it integrated the Western genre and outer space themes while discussing relevant issues of the time. However during several episodes, one could wonder if they were not actually anti-God or anti-religious. This is because the series sometimes attempted to indirectly explain why life existed on Earth by pointing to some higher life form in outer space. These life forms could have created life here on Earth. Or because of the Prime Directive, they were not to interfere with the natural evolution of the native species. Later Star Trek series capitalized on this more than the original in terms of biological evolution while the original was more oriented to the technological advancement of a civilization.

There was one show in the original series that was blatantly Christian though. It was one of the more kooky ones (there were many). It was where an advanced society was complete with Roman gladiators. These battles would take place on television and the participants were worshipers of the Sun. However, there was a twist at the end. Not to give it away, take a look and then read on.

Yes. Many episodes were quite anti-religious, but the times were different back then. There were still elements of Christianity in the United States. We were not completely post-Christian and our entertainment reflected that at times. How times have changed. A newer series today would not be complete without flashes of sex and drug use and a myriad of profanities. This is normal, but it was not always like it is today. The trick is to take oneself out of the time in which one lives and look at life today more objectively. How should we live our lives? Not by looking at the behaviors and the norms of those around us, but by looking at something that is more objective; something that does not change with the whims and wisps of our neighbors. The only guide that would qualify for such objectivity is the Bible and the only way to truly live as our creator, the Son, intended, is to follow his Word without reservation. Pray for strength to withstand the pressures of the Colosseum and endure to the end to win the prize.
